Protecting the vulnerable in our community has never been more important

The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission is implementing a range of strategies to identify and minimise risk of harm to people with disability. Worker screening is one of the strategies that registered NDIS providers need to put in place. Providers must also actively promote a culture that does not tolerate abuse, neglect or exploitation, and focuses on continuous upskilling, education and training for workers.

Society has changed. Collectively, we’re prioritising the safety and welfare of vulnerable people in our community. Billions of dollars have been spent on Royal Commissions, civil litigation and redress schemes, exposing the abuse and neglect of children, people with disabilities and the elderly. The media reports constantly, and investigates aggressively, the many past and present failings of individuals and organisations.

Safeguarding systems and processes have proven to be weak or exploitable or ignored, not unlike the people they are meant to protect.

Criminal offences now exist for organisational leaders when something goes wrong. Record keeping requirements have been extended to 45 years because of the unique nature of delayed reporting of abuse.

The number of Working With Children Checks issued to Victorians alone, has gone from 250,000 to over 3 million, in 10 years. From 2017 to 2020, in NSW and Victoria, over 5,000 people with valid accreditations were barred. Inevitably, some will have slipped through the cracks. This is an everywhere and everyone issue, where we think we have it under control is no longer good enough.

Dutyof.care solves this problem, by unifying fragmented, mandatory accreditation checks into an all-in-one solution. Making vulnerable people safer is our mission. Making that process easier, affordable and secure is why we built dutyof.care.
